Match Report – Nyon 1 v Lausanne XXIIV

CTT Lausanne and CTT Nyon – it’s a tale as old as time, the big-time city slickers with 1000 licenced members, a state-of-the-art hall, Taraflex flooring, coaches, new shirts, and 120 league teams (at the last count, 540% of AVVF is made up of CTT Lausanne teams).

This match on paper should have been very one-sided, 2nd in the league Lausanne, putting out a team with total classifications of 16 versus poor old Nyon, the club with 2 teams, total classification of a paltry 11, a hall that doubles as a part-time ice rink when people aren’t trying to play table tennis on it, and a team of 1 geriatric (Stephen), 1 new father (Nicolas) and one able-bodied player (Mathys). Lausanne, in their tur,n showed up with a strong team of Grégoire, Dmitri and Aldo, full of firepower with not one but two lefties to confound us.

Things started extremely well for Nyon with old one knee Walsh taking out Grégoire in 3 sets, and Nicolas getting to grips with Aldo in 4, while Mathys and Dmitri played a classic, with Dimitri edging it in 4 sets, 11-9….very well played by both. Round two saw the empire strike back with Grégoire and Dmitri taking out Nicolas and Mathys before Stephen again put away Aldo without losing a set…..Nyon then took the doubles in a tight affair, leaving us 4-3 ahead of the last round of singles. Stephen again prevailed over Dmitri without dropping a set, while Grégoire confounded Nicolas to leave the match hanging in the balance…..things looked great for Nyon at the turn in the 5th set of Mathys versus Aldo, but experience showed up as Aldo hit 3 or 4 superb forehands to finally spin the result around to take the final match for Lausanne and leave the match with a very balanced 5-5 scoreline.

Lots to be proud of for CTT Nyon in this result, Mathys being extremely unfortunate to lose out to all 3 despite pushing them all to the limit, and Nicolas will know his arc is trending upwards after such a long time out of the game. This result leaves us in third place in the group at the time of writing, with plenty of table tennis to come, and the long-anticipated return of Stephan “the serve” Kreuzberg for the 2nd half of the first tour.
